Our spiritual journey of Lent begins on February 10, 2016 with the Service of Ash Wednesday. This service will be observed with our congregation, alone. The following 5 Wednesday services will be shared with others at various churches in our community. (A schedule is listed.)
On Ash Wednesday evening we will offer the opportunity to receive the imposition of ashes (a practice of confession and repentance) that dates back to the Old Testament roots of our Christian faith. An example of this comes from the book of Jonah 3:6 “Then tidings reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, and covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes.” 3:10 “When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did not do it.”
It seems to me that we live in a time when humility is not practiced widely, nor is it highly valued. Bragging has become a rather acceptable form of self-promotion. A healthy faith begins with and is nurtured by a healthy respect for the authority and power of the Almighty God. Allow your journey during Lent to be a time for getting back on board with your saving relationship with the Holy and Mighty one.
Our Wednesday services will have as their theme an “opening up” of eyes, hands, ears, heart and life”. Don’t miss this opportunity to share food, fellowship and worship, with Christians throughout your community. It is truly a faith building experience!
